I have to give it to Chiliz; they really pulled it off by signing up clubs, but I think they've wasted a huge potential. Why? Here is my take.
Potential: Ballon D'or Execution: 5th division
Fan tokens are a great concept, and there are plenty of things to do around them. In Chiliz's case, where they primarily targeted soccer clubs, there are great opportunities. A massive Web2 user market with die-hard fans is just waiting to elevate their connections to their club.
The lack of actual benefits from holding the tokens is absolutely this century's biggest screw-up. So far, I've only seen things like voting on what song they're going to play in the arena and what color the captain's armband should be, among other totally pointless activities.
Imagine the money some hardcore fans have. Why not activate holders to compete for box tickets twice a year? Why not allow the top five holders to come and meet the team once a year? Why not have an activation where holders can compete to participate in holders vs. team games?
The teams are already doing these things for non-token holders, and it would not require much to activate token holders and make the fan tokens gain even more traction from even more non-crypto people. I'd also like to see Chiliz start issuing fan tokens for soccer players themselves, at least if they want to grow further within the category. There are only so many massive global teams. Show Less
