Developed by ConsenSys (MetaMask, Truffle, and Infura), Linea is a Type 3 zkEVM. The mainnet went live in July 2023, quickly reaching a $50 million TVL.
In Vitalik's Frameworks for Types of zkEVMs he defines a type 3 as being fully compatible with most Ethereum apps (but not all) with an ability to verify an environment similar to Ethereum with only minor changes needed. He also highlights that Type 3's are faster to generate proofs which makes for easier building and better scalability.
Pros: What sets Linea apart is its exceptional capability to execute original, unmodified bytecode in alignment with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) standards. Users can expect Ethereum-like security with reduced transaction expenses.
Cons: Due to Linea’s incompatibility with all dapps, there will be some that would need to be rewritten in order to work
Linea’s team is working hard towards quickly evolving into a Type 2, ensuring even better compatibility with Ethereum while upholding scalability.
I think all of these layers can add value to the ecosystem, including Linea, especially once it upgrades. Show Less
