“For Anonymity at Scale” - Airtor
Ok so the idea is to support and incentivize The Onion Router (Tor) network so it can scale bigger, then down the road add additional hardware to support new features.
The Onion Router (TOR) is relaying protocol that protects privacy and anonymity while using the Internet. TOR has been around for 10+ years and has a well-earned reputation. TOR is a great service, but the node network is run by volunteers.
According to the Airtor roadmap, the plan is to onboard the current TOR nodes and get them registered by the end of Q3 2023.
Then they will go live with a Proof-of-Uptime, reward system that is based on pinging the registered node to estimate and quantify uptime. This will be great for the current TOR node operators; this means free tokens for doing what they were already doing.
Next, as soon as Q1 2024 they will release a hardware router that will expand TOR and offer earnings for new nodes. They showed the current version of the router at ETHDenver23, so the HW is there and working enough to show off live. Great sign!
They also mention a Wi-Fi Hotspot on TOR and running TOR as an independent network on long-wave radio signals.
This is the cool part, and I really hope they can pull off the LoRa network… They can make a parallel, independent, decentralized Internet that is free of ISPs.
I think the idea is solid, and I love companies that innovate around something existing and make it better. I will be keeping an eye on this project! Show Less
