I am a professional independent musician with 20+ years in the industry. Although my previous work has done respectable numbers on current streaming platforms and generates royalties, it’s pennies and the revenue sharing formula is opaque. Like many other musicians, I’ve been looking for a decentralized blockchain alternative.
I’ve been on Audius since 2021. Witnessed the launch and initial hype cycle and decided to give it a try like the early adopter musician I am. The fact that Nas and Pusha T are investors was a trust signal to me that this was a legit endeavor, although very early still. At the time, it was clear that the successful onboarding of some recognizable artists wasn’t translating into an influx of casual music listeners, but rather a wave of amateur artists and unsanctioned uploading of copyrighted material. It was like early SoundCloud but with way more EDM and where everyone says gm. The UX/UI was clunky and although the potential was there, the path to gain market share vs the established music streaming platforms seemed years away.
Fast forward 2+ years later and I’m pleased with the many new features that have been shipped and the small but passionate community. No longer seeming to be just a decentralized SoundCloud with crypto payments, with the right marketing push and strong network effect Audius is poised to grow exponentially during the next cycle. Most of all, I'm planning to host my past and future musical body of work on this platform and seeing what happens.
