In a ‘strategic’ move that captured the attention of the whole of the financial world, PayPal unveiled its latest endeavour: a stablecoin developed in collaboration with trust company Paxos. However there is an intriguing twist which accompanies this announcement - PayPal has actually yet to commit to integrating the new digital currency as a direct method for conducting transactions with merchants which leaves a big question to me of why launch the stable coin at this moment in time then?

One of my biggest feelings is because this was partly a marketing ploy designed to harness the prevailing crypto hype and redirect the spotlight of publicity back onto PayPal. This for sure was a very calculated move which provides PayPal with a means to capitalize on the crypto world and position themselves at the forefront of the stablecoin landscape and essentially pull off what Facebook/Meta could not.

To highlight the positive impact of PayPal's stablecoin announcement, it also propelled their shares to increase on the day of the announcement. This reaction shows the market's receptiveness to PayPal's strategic manoeuvre. PayPal's shrewd move has at least highlighted their readiness to embrace crypto technology and bring it into the mainstream, but whether the way they are implementing it right now will actually help them to improve their services / payment system will remain to be seen, but for sure this was a stroke of marketing genius I think we have to applaud from PayPal.
