$SUI

Sui has 536k Twitter followers at the time of writing (01 May 2023).

I get a feeling reading through the recent tweets that the community isn't entirely happy with how the project has treated early supporters. Loads of people were expecting an airdrop even though Sui have stated there would be no airdrop from the beginning. Even so, a large number of tweets include the phrase "no airdrop = no community." Others are angry at the fact they needed to KYC on exchanges to qualify for early token purchase. And yet others seem to have been expecting rewards for testing the systems and being early to the project which aren't forthcoming. Several people have tweeted that they had been active on Discord for a long time (Sui stated users needed to be active on Discord since Feb 2023 to qualify for rewards), tested their dapps for months and met the requirements on KuCoin but received no invitation to participate in the IDO. This may be because the exchanges are choosing people in a lottery rather than guaranteeing an allowlist spot for everyone who qualifies. However, there is also a lot of talk about how only those involved in node testing, development, etc are being allowlisted while the general community are being left behind.

Sui also has a large Discord following with 718k community members. The categories in the community category are Support, Beginner Questions, Content, Suggestions, and Report Scams. Strangely there is no general section for day-to-day discussion which would be helpful. The Developer sections here are quite substantial which makes sense given the newness of the project with all of its technicalities, however, it seems to mirror the sentiment on Twitter that the project team cares more about its Devs than it does about the community.

Sui states on Discord that "There will be plenty of activities on main net, but you will need Sui from another source. Http://Suifrens.com will be minting, bug bounties are still available, the developer grant & ambassador programs are all taking applications."

Sui also runs community events, ambassador programmes and an opportunity to become Sui Discord moderators in exchange for incentives.

It seems everyone these days is focussed on airdrops, so I suspect that after launch some of the complaints will die down and that there will be more opportunities like above to take part in supporting the community and get rewarded - after all Sui's ethos is all about building as a collective.

I give the community two starts for now due to the amount of complaints on Twitter, the fact that the Discord channel is lacking any general chat channels and seems to be prioritising the Devs and the lack of a Telegram channel.
