Facing legal charges in many countries made their progress to keep at a low pace, having only a fraction of what they intended to have as new users ( 6 million users, falling 994 million short of its 2023 goal), but that haven't stopped them.

In February of this year, the WLD - the cryptocurrency associated with the project led by Sam Altman, the inventor of ChatGPT - surged 200% since February 11, 2024, and 68% since the project announced that its World App - a digital wallet for crypto assets - reached 1 million daily users on February 17, 2024.

๐Ÿค” On September 25, 2024, the company announced the launch of its orb verifications in Guatemala, Malaysia, and Poland.

The Foundation have been facing legal problems across the Globe in 2024 and this time, was in South Korea.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ The Worldcoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity - which managed the crypto wallet World App - violated South Korean laws by illegally collecting iris data from nearly 30,000 Koreans without proper consent or legal basis.

In addition, Worldcoin:

  • Transferred this biometric data abroad without informing users about the recipient countries or contact details, as required by local regulations.

  • Did not provide clear notifications about the purpose of the biometric data, retention period, and other mandatory details.

  • Initially offered the consent form only in English, limiting comprehension for local users until a Korean version was released in March.

  • In its defense, Worldcoin claimed that iris code data was only used to prevent duplicate registrations and could not identify individuals, suggesting that it was anonymous.

-The privacy watchdog rejected this argument, emphasizing that iris code data is inherently unique, immutable, and directly linked to the individual.

The controversial iris scan by Worldcoin has caught the attention of regulators in several countries, including Germany, Spain, Greece, Italy, India, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Worldcoin Vs. EU Data Protection Authorities: ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ Fines and warnings are flying across the EU, as national data privacy regulators impose disciplinary actions for violations of European data protection laws through the use of biometrics.

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ Why?

The handling of biometric data based on participants' consent, given with insufficient information, cannot be considered a valid legal basis according to GDPR requirements. Show Less
