Deeper Network is built on Polkadot and integrates blockchain, network security and a sharing economy to establish a global P2P network. Their latest hardware products - 'Deeper Connect', operates with over 30,000 active nodes worldwide and are aiming to build a more secure and equitable internet for everyone.

The big question for their products I believe is DPN vs VPN.

While VPNs excel in high-speed access through rented data centres/cloud servers they also come with a few drawbacks:

  • VPN providers can misuse user data as regulation is often absent.
  • VPN servers are geographically limited hindering location choices.
  • VPN IPs are easily identified and can be easily blocked by websites.
  • Single-tunnel limitation means it is necessary to manual switch tunnels to use applications that require a different geographical location.
  • Increasing costs are making VPNs more expensive over time.

On the contrary the advantages of DPN’s appear to counteract most of the disadvantages for VPNs:

  • DPN ensures decentralized data protection.
  • Widely distributed nodes promise global coverage (this statement refers to the future and is not quite completely true YET).
  • Abundant unidentifiable IP addresses to bolster website access.
  • DPN enables multiple tunnels and tailored choices.
  • Users can earn and spend tokens like $DPR for bandwidth which are typically cheaper than VPNs.

HOWEVER, DPN's current bandwidth limitation poses challenges for most people in this world who have become accustom to high internet speeds. There has been several proposed solutions to tackle this main disadvantage. These include deploying high-speed cloud nodes and utilizing multiple tunnels for simultaneous downloads. And also with the rise of gigabit fibre networks across the world, DPN's speed will likely improve a lot in the near future.

Overall while DPNs hold a lot of advantages over VPNs and look like they have a promising future ahead, at this moment in time the most important thing, internet speeds, are something which they negatively affect, making them not a useful and viable tool for someone like myself. I think I will be waiting a couple more years until this technology enhances from the solutions proposed until I fully convert over from VPN to DPN. Show Less
