While Haven Protocol is often referred to as a fork of Monero, a more precise term might be to describe it as a Monero clone. Haven Protocol shares many core features with Monero, including the same transactions per second (ranging from 1700 to theoretically unlimited due to adaptive block sizes), identical base transaction fees (less than 1 cent), a matching block time of 2 minutes, and the utilization of the same mining algorithm, which is proof of work using RandomX.

The primary distinction, and perhaps the only one, lies in Haven Protocol's implementation of a interesting piece of technology known as ‘Coloured Coins’. Coloured Coins loosely describes a class of methods for representing and managing real world assets on top of a blockchain. It was originally proposed as an implementation to be built on top of the Bitcoin protocol but since the increase in popularity of ERC20 it has not come to fruition.

For example, it allows the assignment of specific attributes to a Bitcoin or a fraction of a Bitcoin. This means a Bitcoin could represent assets like Tesla stock or even a single US dollar.

Implementing Coloured Coins in Monero was considered extremely challenging and how Haven Protocol's developers achieved this is outlined in one of their Medium posts from May 2020, which for technical minded people is definitely worth a look at.
