I think Internet Computer uses a more unique tokenomics approach then most people realize. The community holds the responsibility of monitoring and adjusting the system's parameters via NNS proposals to optimize and evolve the IC's tokenomics.

ICP tokenomics are designed to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that balances goals such as maintaining low and stable storage/compute costs for developers, incentivizing node providers with attractive rewards, and fostering balanced staking and governance participation rewards while limiting inflation.

The numbers 👩🏻‍💻
As of July 14th, 2023, the Internet Computer (IC) ecosystem operates with a total supply of 500.8 million ICP tokens, out of which 438.4 million ICP tokens are circulating, constituting 87.5% of the total supply. Additionally, 252.4 million ICP tokens, equivalent to 50.4% of the total supply, are staked. Within the staked ICP, 80.9% has a dissolve delay of more than one year, and 51.5% is staked for an eight-year dissolve. These statistics can be reviewed on the IC neuron dashboard.

Node Provider Rewards: Node providers offering computing/storage infrastructure for the IC receive ICP rewards. The reward amount is consistent in fiat terms, and its variability depends slightly on the node's geographical location. These rewards are paid through the minting of new ICP tokens, contributing to inflation.

Governance: ICP token holders can stake their tokens to create Neurons, which grant voting rights via the Network Nervous System (NNS). NNS allows neuron holders to vote on proposals for protocol upgrades, onboarding node providers, and expanding the network. Neuron holders receive rewards for participating in governance, which are distributed as maturity attributes, convertible to ICP.

Fuel for Computation/Storage: Smart contract computations on the IC use "cycles," fueled by burning ICP tokens. In contrast to Ethereum's "user pays" model, the IC operates on a "smart contract pays" model. Cycles are generated by burning ICP tokens, leading to deflation.

Transaction/Proposal Fees: Transferring ICP between wallets incurs transaction fees, and submitting proposals to the NNS requires small fees in ICP.

The ICP token's total supply is dynamic, influenced by minting (inflationary) and burning (deflationary) mechanisms. Inflation supports node providers and governance participants, while deflation occurs when tokens are burned for computation or transaction/proposal fees.

ICP tokens can be acquired through various means, including direct purchase on exchanges, receiving rewards for participating in governance, receiving tokens from others, developer grants, or obtaining tokens as remuneration for contributing computing capacity as a node provider.

The DFINITY Foundation's Tokenomics Series provides an analytical framework to assess the interplay between supply and demand factors influencing ICP. This quantitative approach aids in evaluating the tokenomics state and potential changes over time.

I am personally not overly impressed with the strength of the ICP community, hence only two stars.

DSCVR is a portal for open discussion about all aspects of Internet Computer, from dapps to memes to Web3 news. There are even some cool games to play there, albeit quite basic ones. Currently there are just over 14.5k users. It's hard to gauge how much engagement is happening there but at the time of writing there was one post in the general area that was put up 6 hours ago and had only 32 likes and one comment.

Discord has nearly 15k members but it is mainly geared toward developers. Another dev site is the Dfinity forum where technical discussion forums have been set up on a variety of topics. There are also weekly meetings held on Wednesdays for devs called the 'Discord Dev Office Hour.'

X has 669.6k followers under the Dfinity name while Dfinity Developers has 29k followers, making X the space with the most followers overall. A post on the main channel made 6 hours ago at the time of posting (15 August 2023 at 23:00) had 84 likes and 4976 views with other similar posts reflect a similar level of engagement. I would've expected a bit more activity given the size of the following and some of the recent developments announced by the project team.

There is no Telegram channel which I am surprised about given how long the project has been in existence.

Like many more technical projects, my impression is that there are quite a few places for people to get together to discuss various aspects related to the development of the project and the dapps associated with it, but very few places for non-technical discussions to be had.

I think this is a shame and I, for one, would welcome a space on TG for general chat and a forum for price discussion. Not having these spaces for the average retail investor can potentially have an detrimental impact on the price of the project longer term as it won't necessarily be a project in the public's consciousness in the next bull run.

Their reverse gas fee structure allows the dApp to pay for the users gas fees, which creates an opportunity for connection without requiring an actual wallet, tokens.

In addition, the ability to host the entire dApp within a Canister Smart Contract is impressive. This technology enables the hosting of the full tech stack on the blockchain, including UI, smart contracts, and data, all within the same Canister. These Canisters are secure and well-protected on the blockchain and essentially function as their own blockchains. Through asynchronous messaging, they can communicate with other Canisters.

For instance, just as you can currently link your Twitter account to a website to unlock certain possibilities, you will also be able to link your account from dApp #4 in this ecosystem to dApp #20.

This opens up a lot of opportunities to bring web2 services to the blockchain, benefiting from a better and more decentralized underlying infrastructure

ICP has the potential to revolutionize the entire internet system and if this project can come close to realizing its ambitions I would expect ICP to emerge as one of the most exceedingly valuable cryptocurrency's in the future.

ICP operates as a world computer blockchain capable of hosting and powering popular social networks, online games, video streaming services, and enterprise systems directly on the blockchain itself. By eliminating the reliance on centralized IT and cloud services, this project aims to establish a decentralized internet—a concept that sounds attractively idealistic and novel.

However, it remains uncertain whether organizations and individuals will embrace this decentralized vision enough to transition away from established giants like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Reclaiming control from these tech behemoths poses a formidable challenge.

Nevertheless, the DFINITY Foundation, the masterminds behind ICP, boasts the largest research and development team in the blockchain industry. With substantial resources at their disposal, they possess the capacity to pursue this audacious challenge making them a key player to watch in this space.
